NpTech Tag Summary: Learnings from FriendFeed Experiment

June 6, 2008 - 11:38pm

During the past few weeks, Twitter has been down or out due to stress. To learn more about Twitter scaling issues read this interview by Jesse Stay. When a service goes down, users will complain. And if happens a lot, they may move on. There was much speculation as to whether they mover to Jaiku (with its newly minted Google money), or Pownce, BrightKite, Tumblr, plurk or FriendFeed.

NpTech Tag Summary: Facebook Apps for Good and GTD

April 10, 2008 - 9:38am
The NpTech Tag Summary went on hiatus to give some space to rethink, reinvent. It came back last month in a new format and aggregation process. Conversations are getting more distributed and it is getting increasingly difficult to use tagging to discover, aggregate, and summarize them. I'm moving beyond monitoring the NpTech tagged items and meta feeds to incorporate nuggets from micro media sources, nptech bloggers, friend feeds, and networks. read more

What is the Attention Economy and What Does it Mean for Nonprofits?

April 9, 2008 - 6:40pm
This month's Net2ThinkTank question is, "How can nonprofits and NGOs succeed in the online attention economy?" A few folks have contacted me to say, "I'd like to participate, but I don't really understand what the attention economy is," so, here is a little more info: Wikipedia defines attention economics as, "an approach to the management of information that treats human attention as a scarce commodity, and applies economic theory to solve various information management problems." In his ReadWriteWeb post, Attention Economy: All You Need to Know, Richard MacManus writes: "A key point is that The Attention Economy is about the consumer having choice - they get to choose where their attention is 'spent'. Another key ingredient in the attention game is relevancy. As long as the consumer sees relevant content, he/she is going to stick around - and that creates more opportunities to sell." In the case of nonprofits, organizations are trying to keep supporters and potentional supporters' attention in order to "sell" the opportunity to make a difference in the world through the channels and services their organization provides (information, donation, membership, volunteering, advocacy, media creation etc.). In his post, Why Words Matter in the Attention Economy, Steve Cebalt of the Nonprofit PR blog writes:read more

The Hunt For Contributors

April 8, 2008 - 9:40pm
The hunt continues for finding contributors for our project, but being one of the winners sure does help. Our corporate malfeasance wiki, Crocodyl.org has attracted a large number of qualified and interested people, so reaching out to those folks has been really useful. We have one contributor who works for Mozilla, some people from Wikileaks and a couple of avid Wikipedians with expert technical know-how, so we are keeping our fingers crossed that these folks will join up officially soon. Anyone interested in helping out, please contact me at ian [at] corpwatch.org. Thanks!

Social Innovation Camp: speed-startups for social impact

April 8, 2008 - 10:55am
Social Innovation Camp happened this weekend, and it rocked. Inspired by a mashup of netsquared, barcamps and seedcamp, it brought together a diverse bunch of hackers & social change activists to cook up prototype projects over the space of a weekend. And it worked. People brought dedication, passion and skill. They had some fun. They went without much sleep. Two things stood out for me; first, it proved (again) that the social web is a generative platform for social impact; and second, that it's possible to do events that go beyond talk and lead to real projects and social businesses. But of course, that's the business of netsquared as well :) Our small organising collective is now recovering, er, aiming to help the projects sustain and grow. There'l be a lot of write-ups, inteviews, videos etc coming out of the camp - more of this later. In the mean time here's a flavour; Posts by Bobbie Johnson, our embedded Media Guardian blogger: My late-night half-way analysis; Live from Social Innovation Camp, the laboratory of buzz A view from Yahoo Developers Network. All the feeds from our backnetwork (warning: includes tweets!) Photos on Flickr. Videoclips and mini-interviews by David Wilcox at Qik YouTube videos tagged with “sicamp” and “sicamp08“ (mostly by The People Speak team) "Teamwork, Quick!" by participant Huey Nhan Enthusiasm from a sponsor (which is nice!) at Accelerating Social Innovation: lessons from SiCamp where Roland Harwood says "On of the big lessons for me of the weekend was how limited organisation can unleash ideas, which is counter-intuitive for many". read more

Join Net2ThinkTank: How Can Nonprofits and NGOs Succeed in the Online Attention Economy?

April 4, 2008 - 4:35pm
One of the many cool things about the social web is how it gives nonprofits and other social benefit organizations the tools to make their own media and to reach more people. On the other hand, as more nonprofits, businesses and individuals create blogs, podcasts, rss news feeds, wikis, social networks, YouTube accounts, Twitter feeds, fundraising widgets, mashups etc., the amount of media, news and calls to action flowing into potential supporters' feed readers and email in-boxes is tremendous. The Net2ThinkTank question for this month is:read more
